Clearing Up Some Confusion About Living A Healthy Lifestyle

I think it’s super important to understand that food is our medicine or poison. Simply put: We are what we eat. This applies to anything else we put in our bodies too, from what we drink to what medications we take.

So how in the world has “healthy eating” gotten so darn confusing?

Well for starters, I’d blame our food labels. I mean, organic means healthy, right? (Ha!) If only labels like that weren’t so darn misleading! Yes, I’m shaking my head at this. Just because that box of cereal now claims its ingredients are “organic” does not mean it’s necessarily a good thing to put in your body.

Turn the package around and look closely at its ingredients. Reading labels when buying packaged food is an absolute necessity. And a good rule of thumb is that if you can’t pronounce an ingredient, neither can your liver process it.

That’s why one of the most important things to do for your healthy lifestyle is eliminate processed foods
(or keep it as minimal as possible). And yes I do understand the convenience these tempt you with. Your extremely hectic schedule leaves you absolutely no time to eat mindfully. So you end up eating thoughtlessly. That’s where you and me need to be super careful.

“If it came from a plant, eat it. If it was made from a plant, don’t.” ~ Michael Pollan

Thoughtless eating is one of the factors that has led to our obesity epidemic.

More than 2 in 3 adults were considered to be overweight or have obesity according to The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). What’s more alarming is the fact our children are greatly suffering from these statistics now too—about 1 in 6 children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 were considered to have obesity. Alarming still, these numbers are NOT showing any chance of decline from new data and studies being done.

Not surprising is that the health of our country is the worst it’s ever been. And a ton of these illnesses and diseases, from heart disease and cancer to diabetes and autoimmune disorders (and everything in between) are now hugely linked to…yep, you guessed it—DIET.

Thoughtless eating is unarguably making us sick! Or worse, killing us off in a very slow, miserable dance with death.

So that poses a question I’ve pondered for quite some time now. In nutrition school, one of the doctors (Libby Weaver, PhD) that lectured us shared a story about when she was asked, “Well, if we’re so unhealthy then why is it we’re living longer?”

Her answer tugged my heart and did a deep dive inside my mind. “Are we really living longer? Or are we dying longer? Sure, modern medicine has advanced to where it’s keeping us alive, but I question the quality of life it provides.”

Pretty deep, huh? Definitely something to be mindful of. Maybe you’re mind is spinning right now like mine had? That answer still overwhelms me and tugs my heart strings.

That’s why I’m doing what I can to clear up the confusion of living healthy and share all the ways it can be fun and exciting and life-changing…Ways it can be easy and very doable…no matter what diet you decide is best for your body and goals.

A while back I shared about A Few Universal Rules every diet should follow, which is still very relevant right now. My hope in going over these “rules” is that you’ll have a better understanding of what you should eat and what you should stay far away from. You can click here to go to that post.

Clearing up the “It’s too expensive to eat healthy” BS

“I can’t afford to eat healthy and organic!” … That’s something I hear a lot and if you don’t know where to buy from, I agree that it can get pretty costly.

But what’s worse is that being sick is way more expensive. And with insurance changes, I’ve heard this more frequently than ever before.

So here are some ways to rock your healthy lifestyle with good nutrition:

1.) Support Your Local Farmer’s Markets! I can get 4 jumbo bags of produce for around $30-$40.
2.) Buy Seasonally! Buying what’s in season can save you quite a bit of $. So keep an eye out for this when you’re at the store.
3.) If you can’t afford fresh produce, frozen is your next best way to go.
4.) Wholesale places like Thrive Market offer organic items at huge discounts. (If you purchase through my Thrive Market links I get a tiny kickback. TIA). Other places I’ve found good deals are: Trader Joe’s, Amazon, Walmart, Target…I’ve been told to check out Aldi but I haven’t had the chance yet.
